May 17 - More than 5 Smooth Stones

Facing Down David's Other Giants

Key Focus:

  • Celebrating "wins" that God has given us as He uses us to do His work and bring Himself glory.
  • High School Graduating Seniors Honored
  • We will play off the theme of stones: 5 smooth stones, foundation stones, milestones, stepping stones, and Ebenezer stones
  • Time in the Word
    • The story of David and Goliath is one of the favorite O.T. stories for children growing up. We know the basic details (see 1 Samuel 17). But what often gets overlooked is that when David's great victory over Goliath occurred, it was the second battle David had to face that day.
    • The first battle David faced was the battle of low expectations: he was a shepherd boy for his dad and a delivery boy for his older brothers. David had to lead when experienced and battle-hardened soldiers wouldn't and had to overcome the skepticism and ridicule of his own brothers.
    • We as a church must call our young adults to lead, not merely tread water or blindly follow and we must be willing to let their idealism convict us and lead us to faith-victories when their passion is for God and the honor of His name.

Key SoHills Emphasis:

  • Ricky Pruitt and the youth team will help us honor our graduating seniors
  • Stephen Corbett will help develop the video to introduce & honor our seniors
  • Donnie Carroll will coordinate the Bible presentation for our graduating first graders
  • The Shepherds will be involved with both presentations
Key Scriptures:
  • 1 Samuel 17:12-28 tniv

vs. 28: When Eliab, David’s oldest brother, heard him speaking with the men, he burned with anger at him and asked, “Why have you come down here? And with whom did you leave those few sheep in the wilderness? I know how conceited you are and how wicked your heart is; you came down only to watch the battle.”

  • 1 Timothy 4:12

Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.
