December 20, 2009 - Traveling Mercies #4:
You Gotta Be Kiddin' Me!
The Mary, The Donkey, & Bethlehem
Key Focus:
- Mary's incredible journey to Bethlehem
- Not just the physical journey to Bethlehem as a pregnant mom
- But also the journey of faith to prepare for the angel
- And the journey of faith from the angel to Joseph
- And then the journey through Jesus' ministry
- And then the journey to Pentecost
Time in the Word Focus:
The focus is on Mary's journey of faith to Bethlehem that involved being a servant to the Lord in response to the angel, her journey with Joseph to do the unthinkable and inexplicable, and their journey to Bethlehem to give birth to Jesus. Of course, this prefigures the whole journey of Jesus' life that they will share with all its mystery, wonder, confusion, and challenge.
Connection Point: Mary risks everything to partner with God even though she is young. She is a reminder to not waste our young years, the idealism of our youth, and our ability to believe the unimaginable. The traveling mercy we want to take from Mary is the power of personal worship in an obedient life. Mary's words of piety and acts of obedience, the offering of her body as a living sacrifice (Romans 12:1-2), remind us that worship is about all of life and the discovery of God's power in going a wholly, and holy, different direction than most people are willing to go.
- Key focus of the Time in the Word
- Mary's journey as the Savior's mom (the journey of belief - annunciation, elizabeth, joseph)
