Freedom in the Spirit (2 Corinthians 3:17-18; Galatians 5:1-6; Romans 8:1-13)

Key Question:  How does the Holy Spirit help empower beyond our limitations, failures, and sins and put to death the misdeeds of our flesh?

Kernel Message:

  1. When we try to live for God on our own strength, we eventually find ourselves in bondage to something. This is called the law (or principle) of sin and death (Romans 8:1-4). Sometimes this bondage is dressed up in spiritual garb, but it is still bondage and ends up in the same place as all other bondage to sin (Romans 7:21-24). But we are promised that the Holy Spirit can help us overcome the misdeeds of our flesh (Romans 8:13) and fulfill the righteous demands of God's law (Romans 8:1-4). But how is this possible?
  2. We walk in step with the Spirit (Galatians 5:25), allowing the Spirit to give us the freedom to be conformed to Jesus (2 Corinthians 3:17-18; Galatians 5:22-23). We do this by asking God to give us the Spirit (Luke 11:13 and last week!) and do what turns the Holy Spirit loose in our lives (Ephesians 1, 3, 5, 6 -- focus next week)!

Practical Pieces of the Message:

  • Scenario:

Ugandan trip - debrief. Prey! What's the difference between seeing them in the zoo? Freedom to be who they are. Freedom to attack and devour their prey, because it is, after all, their dinner! Freedom to run without limits to keep from becoming dinner! Free to protect your habitat, because it is, after all, your home. Freedom to play and roam and enjoy unlimited space with those like you.

  • Promise:

God's Spirit gives us power to do what we could never do alone!

Key Point:

  • We can turn loose the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives by asking God to release the power of the Holy Spirit and commit to the things that allow the Holy Spirit to be at work in our lives.
