July 18, 2010 - SpiritFire
We will have two different messages, one for Daybreak and one for Refresh, both concentrating on the Jesus and the Holy Spirit.
Daybreak Message: Stephen Corbett
Unity of the Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:12-26; Ephesians 4:2-6)
Kernel Message:
- By God’s design, the Holy Spirit is to be a major unifying force among diverse believers
- Christian unity will happen when, with the help of the Holy Spirit,:
- We confidently affirm our own place in the body (1 Cor. 12:15-16)
- We graciously affirm others’ place in the body, especially those who may be considered weaker (1 Cor. 12:21-25)
- We share life with our fellow body parts in good times and bad
Practical Pieces of the Message:
- Scenario: Observing diverse unity among street kids in Denver (Cheeto video); My knee hurting while walking down a mountain, and my other body parts responding to the pain.
- Promise: Christ prayed for our unity in his last moments as a free man (Jn. 17:20-23). Unity in the body is a important to Christ and an initiative of the Spirit. Therefore in the church - in the body of Christ - we don’t shoot our wounded. We don’t surround ourselves only with people like us. And we don’t pout that because we’re not gifted like so-and-so, we don’t belong. Rather, we live out the words of 1 Cor. 12:27 - Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.
Key Point:
- Our call is to accept and care for one another as members of Christ’s body.
Key Scriptures:
- 1 Corinthians 12:12-26
- Ephesians 4:2-6
Drama, Media, & Connecting Pieces:
- Cheeto interview - Care among the street kids
- Scripture Reading & Prayer: Please read all of these at both Daybreak & Refresh for our Scripture reading out of the TNIV!
Refresh Message: Mark Phillips
The Holy Spirit
Start with the baptism of Christ, focusing on "the Word" and the actions of Father, Son, and Spirit in that event. This will let me talk just a little bit about the theology of these 3, but then spend the bulk of it on the practical implications of indwelling and the active role of God in the world.
