Choosing leaders is a crucial time in the life of our church -- it is not simply going through the motions.

    1. It is a holy moment (holy assembly vs. 2; holy requirements vs. 3; holy focus vs. 4)
    2. It is an empowering moment (congregational input vs. 3; leadership affirmation vs. 6; authority to lead vs. 3)
    3. It is a saving moment (the lost are saved vs. 7; the struggling are served vs. 1; the saved are sent vs. 3)

Old CTT for this Date -- When Fields Lie Empty (Habakkuk)

  • Habbakuk
  • Romans 8:26-28
  • Scripture Reading: Habakkuk 3:16-19
  • Habakkuk serves the Lord in a dark period when he feels his nation is going down the drain -- immorality, injustice, neglect of the weak. And as dark as things seem, God reveals they are going to get darker. Habakkuk cannot fathom God's answer. He honestly speaks to God about his frustration, confusion, disappointment, and heartache. God reiterates his promise to ultimately bring about good, but not before hardship.
  • Habakkuk's response of faith is not only beautiful, but powerfully challenging to us. What do we do in the darkest times?
    • Are we honest with God about our complaints and concerns? Isn't that what the Psalms show us to do?
    • Are we faithful in who we are to God?
    • Do we hold on to God's promises and commit ourselves to live for God regardless of the circumstances?
  • Focus: What is our faith in God and following the ways of God based upon -- circumstantial blessing or the nature and work of God?
