Window to Wonder #4: From Son to Savior
"Whoever does God's will is my brother and sister and mother." (Mark 3:35)
Sunday Morning: Daybreak & Refresh
Core Ideas:
- Our focus will include our graduating seniors and first graders, but we will have about 10-12 minutes of focused time in the Word at both services.
- Phil will focus on Mary's transition from mother of the Messiah to faithful disciple of the Lord Jesus.
- Transitions for both parents and children are hard and glorious — just as God designed it.
- Incredibly hard transition for Jesus as he knew at 12 he was God's Son as well as Mary and Joseph's boy. Yet he lived up to his responsibilities as a son every way ...
- Went home and obeyed
- Fulfilled his role as a son to his father and apprenticed and became a carpenter.
- Didn't reveal his real identity in any way until the wedding at Cana — nobody expected anything of him in Nazareth.
- Made sure his mother was cared for at the Cross.
- Incredibly hard transition for Mary as she lost Joseph to death, dealt with "sibling rivalry on steroids" with Jesus brothers and sisters and the Lord, the crashing conflict of her own messianic understanding of Jesus, and watching Jesus grow up and become a man, but more than man, the Son of andmthe Son of God.
- Our last image of Mary — in the upper room!
- While we don't seem Mary mentioned again, her influence is felt in many ways!
- The early narratives of the Gospels
- Jesus' legacy!
- The influence of James and his letter
- The teaching of Jude
Key Focus:
- Moments of "conflict" between Mary and Jesus that prepare us for the Cross. Mary carried the idea of a heroic, destroy the Romans and clean up the house of Herod and the Jewish leaders with her into Jesus' ministry.
- Trip to the Temple — Luke 2:41-52
- Wedding at Cana in Galilee where she clearly wants Jesus to fix the problem, but Jesus tells her to wait on his timing and his purpose, not her own. She must submit to him as Lord, not he submit to her as parent (also notice his brothers are still in the picture at this point) — John 2:1-12
- Jesus' true family — Mark 3:20-21, 31-35
- Jesus' brothers don't believe — John 7:1-5; cf. Mark 6:4
- Blessed is your mother who gave you birth! No, blessed are those who hear the word of God and obey it! — Luke 11:27
- Obeying her Lord and waiting for the dawn of a new day — Acts 1:14
- Mary's ongoing influence through quiet touches of grace in the early story of Jesus in the gospels
- Angels, Joseph, and Elizabeth
- Anna & Simeon & holding things in her heart
- Angels and Egypt
- The Temple story
- The Wedding Story
- The "out of his mind" story
Key SoHills Emphasis:
- Graduating Seniors
- First Graders Rite of Passage
- Celebrating wins — what the Lord has done in us!
Key Scriptures:
- Luke 2:51-52 possible for Scripture reading
- Acts 1:12-14 possible for use in Scripture reading
- Mark 3:31-35 for use in sermon
- John 7:1-7; 1 Corinthians 15:3-7 Jesus' death was tragic to his brothers and sisters who didn't believe in him. But his resurrection and appearance to his brother James changed everything! just like celebrating the Supper on Sunday, remembering his death inlight of his resurrection changes evrything for us!
Communion Focus:
- 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 Have you ever wondered what Jesus' reunion with his mother was like? Now what will it be like for us to be reunited with thse that we love when Jesus returns, we are reunited with those who have gone before us, and sit at the great wedding feast of the Lamb? Part of Communion is remembering Jesus' death and proclaiming that he is coming again (1 Corinthians 11:26). Like Mary came to the tomb focused on the death of Jesus, we come to this Table much the same way. But a powerful and wonderful thing happens: Jesus meets us at this Table and he is our living, risen, Lord who is promising in this meal to return for us and reunite us with other believers who have gone before us and we will all share in the wonderful feast of heaven (Revelation 19:1-9; Matthew 8:10-12). So we eat, not in sorry, but in anticipation and hope and reunion!
